Can you be Your own Life Coach 8 Questions to Assess Your Goals

Can you be Your own Life Coach 8 Questions to Assess Your Goals Can you be Your own Life Coach 8 Questions to Assess Your Goals When reviewing his bio, I wondered why he never thought to include life coach in his credentials. His responseHow does one technically become a coach? This question made me think. Although hes done many personal and professional trainings (in a range of areas), this businessman hasnt been certified by the International Coach Federation or the Association for Coaching, to name a couple.Yet, with his education and immense experience in training, coaching, consulting and professional development, I would deem him fit to boast the title of coach or life coach. The convo led me to dig a little deeper into this subject. I dont know about you, but nowadays it seems like every time I turn around someone claims to be a life coach. When I see someone on TV or pick up a new book and research the author, 7 times out of 10 (as of late) the persons bio includes the title l ife coach.According to my good friend Wikipedia, the first use of the term coaching to mean an instructor or trainer arose around 1830 in Oxford University slang for a tutor who carries a student through an exam.Coaching thus has been used in language to describe the process used to transport people from where they are, to where they want to be.And this process of transporting people from their current to their desired status has blossomed into a billion dollar industry. In his article, Top 10 professional life coaching myths, Robert Pagliarini notes that the Harvard Business Review reported that coaching is a $1 billion a year industry. And IBISWorlds latest Business Coaching market research report notes a $9 billion revenue for the industry in 2014.Although business is booming, many people have been and continue to be skeptical about hiring a life coach- and one of the reasons is, as stated above, because it seems like just about anyone can call him or herself a coach. In the same coaching myths article, Pagliarini supports this notion when explaining Myth 1 Life coaches are professionals who can help you achieve your goals. He writes, One of the problems in the coaching industry is that anyone can call themselves a professional coach, life coach, personal coach, etc. Jennifer Corbin, the president of Coach U, one of the largest and oldest coach training organizations in the world, has saidTechnically, anyone can hang up a shingle as coaching is not regulated. Many people coaching have no idea what coaching is as they havent been trained or havent been coached by a professionally trained and credentialed coach. There are schools that will offer a credential after three hours of training and people read a book or watch a TV program and decide Im a coach As a result, the quality of coaches vary dramatically.Another problem is that life coaches can be expensive. Harvard Business Review explains that the median hourly rate for a life coach (in 2009) was $500/hr.I would love to receive career advice and have help getting from my current location to my desired personal and professional goals, but at that rate (which Im sure has increased over the years) hiring a life coach to achieve this isnt likely. So, for those of us who cannot afford the services of these coaches and because, today, many with a little experience slap themselves with a life coach label anyway, I thought we could try our pfote at being our own lifes coach. And to help us do so, below are eight questions to help assess your personal and professional life and goals. Think about each one carefully to make an honest assessment of your current status.Note These questions are simply to get you thinking and wont actually provide you with a step-by-step approach to reach your goals. Once you answer the questions, hopefully youll have a better understanding of your current status and then can proceed to create your own step-by-step plan to transport yourself from where you are to whe re you want to be.1. How are you currently meeting/achieving your personal, professional and business life goals? 2. What level of discipline do you possess to manage your goal ?3. How do you evaluate your current personal and professional state of business readiness? 4. To thy own self be true How unique, creative and/accomplished do you believe you really are?5. In what ways are you helping or hindering your lifes success with your current skill and mindset?6. What are meaningful and authentic ways you can express/manifest your gifts, talent and skills?7. How accomplished are you relative to effectively influencing others?8. A Beginners Guide to Maternity Leave

A Beginners Guide to Maternity Leave A Beginners Guide to Maternity Leave In the United States, maternity leave laws can be confusing. Some states have awesome maternity leave laws and some do not. Some companies offer outstanding maternity leave and other offer nothing. If youre pregnant you need answers in a jiffy because there is much to plan! Lets address your top maternity leave law questions. How Long Can You Legally Take Maternity Leave? The short answer is that, according to U.S. law, you can take 12 weeks of leave. Heres the long answer with the facts. In 1993 President Bill Clinton passed the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which protects the job of any worker who takes time away from work due to a serious illness, a sick family member, or to care for a newborn, adopted or foster child. The law says that if you have worked for your company for 12-months and have worked at least 1,250 hours and the  company has 50 or more employees within 75-miles you may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave within a 12-month period under certain circumstances.  For more information on FMLA check out the U.S. Department of Labor FMLA page. How Long Is the Average Maternity Leave? Your doctor will say your body needs six weeks to recover from childbirth and eight weeks if you had a c-section. FMLA will protect your job for 12 weeks, but (and thats a big but) it is unpaid. So, the real question is how long can you afford to take an unpaid leave? Your choice may come down to money. If your company allows you to use sick time, vacation time, personal time and also offers short-term disability, you may be paid for some of your leave. Now would be a good time to start crunching the numbers. Just like there is no average pregnancy, there is no average maternity leave. You have many options you need to investigate. Then youll decide the right length of time you can afford. How Does Short Term Disability (STD) Work for Maternity Leave? Short-term disability will offer you six weeks pay for a normal childbirth and eight weeks for a c-section. The rest of your maternity leave will be unpaid and job-protected with FMLA. Short-term disability wont cover your entire paycheck, but it will cover a good chunk of it (check your HR manager for the details). STD doesnt start paying out right away. You need to wait for an elimination period, in which the insurance company confirms your disability. Your disability is that you gave birth to a child. Youll need to account for this in your budget if you have bills due during this time period. Which States Offer Paid Maternity (Family) Leave? Out of the 50 United States, only three offer a paid maternity leave. They are  California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island and on  January 1, 2018, New York will join this list. Do You Get Paid When You Are on Maternity Leave? If you live in the USA, you do not get paid by the federal government while on maternity leave. Hopefully one day the USA will join the rest of the world and offer a paid family leave. Our government is working on it.   This law has not been passed by its good to be in the know.  The Family and Medical Insurance leave (FMLI) or FAMILY Act  was introduced to the US House of Representatives in 2013.  The Act proposes paid maternity leave.  With FMLA, its not guaranteed paid so  the FAMILY Act  proposes to support US families by offering something that almost all other nations are paid leave.  Click here  to read the bill and its status. Which States Have Their Own Maternity Leave Laws? 14 of the 50 of the states in the US  offer their own maternity laws. This is a small number but the good news is that many states are working on some family-friendly workplace laws. If you want to check out what your state is offering their residents check out The National Conference of State Legislatures site which keeps an updated list of state maternity leave laws. Consider this article a beginners guide to maternity leave. There are many elements that can predict what your maternity leave will be like. They are what your company is like, what their maternity leave policy is, and if they offer Short Term Disability. Then you need to find out what your state offers you (although your HR department will know this information). Next, what your finances look like. Once you have all of this information youll be able to decide. Sources U.S. Labor Department The National Conference of State Legislatures.

4 steps to a successful personal development plan

4 steps to a successful personal development plan 4 steps to a successful personal development plan We tend to think about our careers and personal development as one ongoing process like a river flowing constantly. But if you’re swimming in that river, every so often you need to stop to take a breath. Taking a moment to create a personal development plan is like taking a very deep breath.I was reminded this a couple of months ago when I broke my constant work cycle of 10 years. Suddenly, I had no current job and no idea what the next one would be. I was so tired of moving straight on to the next thing without rest. So I decided to take a month off, look around, and actually think hard about the next move. Lo and behold, my personal development plan was born. Why you need a personal development plan?Imagine if you asked a contractor to build your new house and they said we dont need a plan, well figure it out as we go. You wouldnt tolerate that for a second. So why do so many of us go through life that way? Most of the time we harbor aspirations and dream dreams, yet we rarely sto p and think about our future in detail. A personal development plan helps you know where you’re headed and how to get there, with specifics. First, this will bring clarity to your thinking and you’ll know exactly where you want to be. What’s more, it will give you peace of mind that you’re going in the right direction on a daily basis. Efforts will feel more deliberate and decisions will be easier, as you will have a clear benchmark.Personal development expert Jim Rohn said: “When you look at successful people, you will almost always discover a plan behind their success. It is the foundation for success.” I couldn’t agree more. How to build your personal development plan? The process of building your plan can take considerable time. This is completely normal and you shouldn’t rush things. However, it’s a good idea to set a deadline in your mind. After all, tasks are a kind of fluid they take as much space as you give them.Step 1: Clear out your visionYou have to sta rt with the end in mind. To build your personal development plan, look at what’s on the other side. Think about your future life. Choose a timeframe that makes sense for you if you are still in your 20’s, a look at 3 or 5 years from now is enough. The older you get, the longer the planning period you can have. Now, imagine your life in, say, 3 years and go through your imaginary day:What’s the first thought that passes your mind in the morning? What’s the reason you get out of bed? How’s your day structured? What’s your workplace? What do you do there? How much time do you spend with friends and family? What makes you feel accomplished at the end of the day? What gives you energy moving forward and what drains your energy? In her book Pivot, author Jenny Blake even suggests you craft a full story here’s her template for an Ideal Day Mad Lib.Now take one step back and review. What are the areas that will make you feel successful? This will help you determine your values. Map them out you can use anything, from a note-taking app to a blank sheet of paper, from a simple bullet list to a fancy visual board. The best way this works for me is by using a mind map with several main nodes for each of the areas in your life. Some people prefer to keep that simple, with 2-3 nodes for professional, personal and social fields. Others go in more details the framework blogger Michael Hyatt uses has 10 life domains:IntellectualEmotionalPhysicalSpiritualMaritalParentalSocialFinancialVocational (career-related and professional)Avocational (hobbies and interests)I believe the map works best with 5-6 categories and you can put there everything you want to if you feel like travel is a key field for your development, best to have it there. After you have the key areas as main nodes, complete your mind map by including several sub-nodes that will make the field a success. Here’s an example of the end result using the free version of the tool Mind Meister. The end result wi ll give you a broad sense of what areas you should focus on.Step 2: Outline your strengths and areas for improvementYou’ve put down a pin on where you want to go now let’s see what are the means of going forward.First, think about what you already have going for you what are the strengths and the skills that are already relevant to your dream? Maybe you want to move into a new work field then your natural networking skills will help you get to know the industry quicker. Then, make a list of skills you need to develop and projects you can start working on to move you closer to your goals. Think about the people you can contact and who can help you along the way. At this point you don’t have to be too specific think of it as a kind of brainstorming. Jenny Blake has a handy template on this, as well. After you’ve created a long list, look at the different points and group them together to form clusters. You can use a format that’s well known by most business students the S WOT chart. Although we’re used to thinking about it as a tool to assess organizations, it’s just as handy for assessing your personality. You just have to draw a four quadrant map and use each part for your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. If this sounds too abstract, check out the questions for building a personal SWOT chart here.Step 3: Build your personal development planAfter you have a clear direction, let’s go into detail. The key here is to get down to specific actions for the future. You start by setting up specific projects. What do you need to get them done? What resources will you need? Books to read, courses to take, tools to subscribe toWhat people will help you do it? Friends, mentors and so on.What will success look like? Set specific criteria for measuring that. What is the timeframe? Either put in a general deadline or milestones for different parts of the project. You’ll end up with a clear idea of what needs to get done and how to do it. Now g et doing! You can even tie your personal development plan to your annual goals. Read more about setting annual goals here.Step 4: Review and adaptPresident Eisenhower once said: “Plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” The importance of a personal development plan is in getting the clarity that comes with answering questions about your future. But it is not set in stone. After all, life changes fast and we need to change with it. That’s why it’s important to review and adapt.Reviews can go on a quarterly basis. Make sure you keep your eye on the prize and remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Reread your vision, check out your values mind map. But after that focus just on what needs to be done over the next quarter otherwise, you might feel overwhelmed by the full picture and never get around to doing anything. If some project no longer makes sense, don’t hesitate to remove it from your personal development plan. Don’t hesitate to adapt the p lan according to new interests or a change in circumstances. A good personal development strategy grows as you do. As Tony Robbins put it, “Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.”Hand-picked related content:To share or not to share? You don’t have to advertise your new journey to everyone, so don’t rent that billboard in front of work just yet. However, it’s good to validate your personal development plan with several key people. These can be co-workers, family members, close friends. In a best case scenario, they will be diverse enough to cover all of your plan’s areas. This team of mentors will be able to support you throughout your personal development journey. They will point out ways to achieve your goals, introduce you to new people and resources, or just be there for you when going gets hard. They can also serve as an accountability group when you’ve shared your goals with others, you feel obliged to see them through.A conclusionTak ing a look around and making sure you know what you’re going after is very important and it can be quite refreshing. When I built my personal development plan, I felt energized and ready to conquer every challenge. I was sure I knew what I was doing and that gave me confidence in pursuing my vision. But if youd like some more inspiration regarding just where an amazing plan can take you, check out our successful resumes page. Dont ask me where Im from ask what drives me

Don’t ask me where I'm from â€" ask what drives me Don’t ask me where I'm from â€" ask what drives me “Where are you from?” is a question I hear often. When I am in California, the state where I have lived since I was 13, went to high school, college, and graduate school, worked for my entire career, owned property, and have been raising my kids, the answer goes one of two ways.Sometimes, I pause to consider what to say. This makes people visibly uncomfortable, because they realize the question is either difficult or inappropriate.Other times, without missing a beat I say, “I am from here. I am Californian. I grew up in San Francisco.” This leads to either awkward silence, or further inquiry about where I am “really” from and attempts to learn my precise heritage. After all, my name is Olga. While I was in Ukraine, I was a proverbial plain Jane. I was one of seven Olgas in a class of 28. In the United States, I am either the only Olga or one of the few Olgas people have met in person. And from what I hear from others, I have a distinct non-American accent. This combination makes people believe there’s no way I could possibly be from here - from San Francisco, from California, from the United States. And so they inquire, unsatisfied until they hear an answer that fits their assumptions. After witnessing this awkward exchange a few times, usually at parties, my American husband explained that the “Where are you from?” question is merely an innocent curiosity, part of polite small talk. It is meant to be a prompt for me to share who I am. According to him, there is no need to stop being my articulate self and create needless awkwardness. He told me that the answer is simple: “I was born in Ukraine.”But it’s not that simple. And I’m honestly not trying to be awkward. I just can’t control this reaction. It is naturally there, especially now that I can anticipate the natural awkwardness that follows. And although it may be asked innocently, the question itself implies that I am not from here, whatever “here” means. It implies that I am a fo reigner - a very integrated one, but still foreign. The question implies that I don’t belong, at least to some extent. That’s a really difficult reality for someone who spent her formative years in California to grasp. After all, I was an American teenager in an inner city school. I grew up with the American teen culture of the nineties, with baggy clothes, bare midriffs, and boy bands.I definitely didn’t have a Ukrainian experience. I have been in California longer than I have been anywhere else. So although I was born in Ukraine, I feel that I am from California.“But that’s not what people want to hear,” my well-meaning husband pointed out to me.Why should I care about what people want to hear when it comes to my identity? It is mine, not communal, after all. Isn’t the question meant to uncover who I am? Why should I live up to their expectations?“Because it is polite,” my husband explained.“Polite?!” I am surprised. “It’s mostly misleading,” I proteste d. “Since when is lying polite?!”He disagreed. “Olga, Ukraine is where you are from. It is where you were born.”Yes, it is where I was born. But I don’t think that is where I am from. It’s not where I grew up, where my identity was formed, or where I built my career and family. Our conversation quickly descended into a classic Socratic questioning - that happens when lawyers marry each other. I point out to my husband that according to his logic, if I were born in an airplane flying from Ukraine to the United States, I would have to tell people “I am from the airplane.” Wouldn’t that cause an uncomfortable silence?I have had similar discussions with non-family members as well. For example, a well-meaning vendor who was pitching his business to my department asked me the “Where are you from?” question when he met with me and my then-manager for the first time. This caused reaction number one - a very pregnant pause as I considered how to answer his question in a way that would not jeopardize our professional relationship. My manager later asked me why answering the question was so difficult. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you be that speechless,” he commented.“Well, how often are you asked where you’re from?” I asked him.He could not think of the last time people asked him this question, even though he was born in another state and spent less time in California than I had. “That’s my point,” I told him. “People assume that you are from California, even though you are not. But you belong nonetheless.”Others have pointed out to me that it is merely polite to have a conversation that flows in a predictable way. They believe I shouldn’t make people feel like they’ve asked me a dumb question. But on some level, it is a dumb question. It may be a natural and easy question to ask. But it is certainly a wasted question.Even if I gave you a polite answer and told you where I was technically born without an awkward pause, y our understanding of me as a person will not be enriched if you ask “where I’m from.” All that tells you is where I was born, why my name is unique, and why my accent sounds foreign. All it does is put me in a simple box, labeled “not from here.”If anyone actually wants to get to know me, they should ask me a question that requires more than a five-word answer.Don’t ask me where I’m from. Ask me what drives me.I would be happy to share my passion for startups, gender equity, visual arts, and justice. I will happily tell you how law and public policy fit into my personal and professional lives. I’ll gladly explain how my passions influenced where I choose to work, how I like to contribute in my community, and how I raise my children. This way, we won’t have a short, to-the-point conversation. Instead, we can have a long, deep, and meaningful conversation. And you’ll have a glimpse at who I am as a person, not as a category that neatly falls into a box.Where I am fr om is not the same as what as drives me. In fact, knowing where I was born will only give you a minuscule glimpse as why I get up in the morning. Because “where I’m from” doesn’t tell you where I am now, how I got there, or where I’m going. So, why not ask me this question?! Why not get to know me as a person? If you ask me, “Olga, what drives you? Why do you get up in the morning?,” I will certainly not stumble. And I will never be speechless.I will give you a very rich answer about my goals and hopes. I’ll tell you about how I would like to leave the world in a better shape than I found it. I’ll even share my complete mission statement, with values and concrete steps I take every day to get there.Of course, you don’t have to engage in this deep dive about Olga. We can just get down to business or have a superficial discussion about the weather. But either way, don’t put me in a box as part of small talk. This article was originally published on ThriveGlobal.com.  Olga V. Mack is a Vice President of Strategy at Quntstamp, the first decentralized security auditing blockchain platform. In the past she has held various roles at ClearSlide, Visa, Zoosk, Pacific Art League, Wilson Sonsini, and Yahoo. Olga founded the Women Serve on Boards movement that advocates for women to serve on corporate boards of Fortune 500 companies.

How to Talk About Your Expertise When You Dont Think You Have One

How to Talk About Your Expertise When You Don’t Think You Have One How to Talk About Your Expertise When You Don’t Think You Have One Do you know your expertise? If you had to describe your career, would you say that you’re a jack (or jill) of all trades? Maybe you know enough about a lot of things, but not enough that you would say qualifies you to call yourself an expert. But everybody is good at something (and most are good at a lot of things). So even when you don’t think you have one, below are a few tips on how to talk about your expertise. Heres how you should talk about your expertise, even when you dont think you have any: 1. Forget about work experience. Lack of relatable work experience is perhaps one of the biggest reasons you might think that you don’t have expertise- but you do. It’s important to ditch that mindset of believing that without a tangible job that related directly to your expertise that you don’t have any. While employers are looking to correlate expertise to previously held positions, you can prove your expertise in other ways. Such as…. 2. Think about your education. Remember that degree you have in medical technology? Or all of those certifications you have in phlebotomy? All of your education counts directly towards your expertise. Just because you haven’t put it into practice in every position you’ve held doesn’t make it less relevant. So if you have considerable knowledge in a specific field (but lack real-world work experience) you can absolutely still talk about your expertise in job interviews! 3. Factor in your extracurriculars. Maybe you took time off to raise your children and helped out at their school doing fundraising. Or perhaps you wanted to find work with more meaning and volunteered at a non-profit doing grant writing. All of your “non-jobs” count towards upping your expertise, too! Take some time to go over your extra curricular activities and see which ones have skills that can be translated into experience that expands your expertise. Chances are, you’ll find some that helped to add to your knowledge and make you more of an expert than you realized. 4. Consider your soft skills. Soft skills are a critical component during the hiring process. They can give you that extra edge over job candidates who might not even realize how important they are or lack them. Soft skills, (such as communication skills, adaptability, problem solving, self-managing, collaborating, and conflict resolution), are particularly important for job seekers who want a remote job, since those skills are imperative no matter what type of telecommuting job you want. During a job interview, you can stress your expertise in communications, and pinpoint specific examples when your communication skills came into play. Or you can highlight your ability to work as a team player while still being able to self-manage. Remember, expertise isn’t always about knowing what is written in books or job experiences, but also showcasing your expertise as a remote worker. Even if you feel that you don’t have any expertise to talk of, don’t sell yourself short! Without even realizing it, you are an expert in probably a few different fields. So think beyond past jobs and look at your life (and life experiences). Chances are, you possess a lot more expertise than you might think! Readers, have you struggled with finding your expertise? Has this inhibited you from applying for jobs that you wanted? Let us know about your experiences in the comments below!

Twelve Tips for Managing your Business during a Vacation

Twelve Tips for Managing your Business during a Vacation Twelve Tips for Managing your Business during a Vacation Twelve Tips for Managing your Business during a Vacation Rossheim, Senior Contributing Writer Managers and vacations dont always mix. So how can you possibly pull yourself away from your young business for two weeks to take a vacation that youve needed for five years? Just think of all the things that could go wrong: all of the operational flubs that could go unanswered, all of the poor decisions that might be taken, all the accounts that could be lost. Youve climbed every mountain to become asuccessful small business owner, so how can you possibly leave business in the hands of your handful of employees while you go mountain-climbing? Because without the work life balance and perspective that a holiday provides, you wont remain an effective executive. I was that guy checking email at the beach not a good thing, says Scott Miller, a serial entrepreneur who in 2010 launched The Bee, a web-based financial application. I just decided to take the risk. During a month-long family vacation in New Zealand while he was running a previous venture, Miller had absolutely no communication with his staff or clients. I gave my staff our itinerary, but I wasnt going to make it easy for them to reach me. They handled issues on their own and made some great decisions. Dont feel ready to take the plunge and revamp your management style? For your pre-vacation reading, scan these dozen top tips from seven entrepreneurs who know how to take a small business vacation. Get clients familiar with your proxies. Dont let your email auto-responder be the one to tell your customers who to contact while youre on a two-week pleasure trip. In the client contract we make it clear that my non-equity partner and contractors might get involved; transparency is important, says Erin Powers, owner of Powers Mediaworks, which represents law firms. Network it. Network with other small firms in your industry and exchange resources when principals go on vacation. It does require a high degree of trust to work with people who are occasionally your competitors, says Powers. Who will do your duties? Enumerate and delegate your daily activities, one by one. Rob Jager, principal of Hedgehog consulting, advises: Look for tasks that only you do. Ask yourself, is it critical that I do these tasks? Identify who on the team can perform them. Maximize opportunities for staff. Make a virtue of your need to depend on your staff while youre away by asking your employees to do more. It was great to see people step up and take more responsibility, says Miller. Looking in the mirror, it was obvious that I had been holding that back. What would Socrates do? Starting now, get in the habit of asking your staff lots of questions in the course of business. Every time a problem or question comes up, a business owner should ask, What would you do if you couldnt get hold of me? says Jager. Practice, practice, practice. Practice being hands-off for longer and longer stretches even when youre in the office to allow employees to get comfortable being in charge, says Kate Koziol, president of K Squared Communications. Prepare for the worst case. Whats the worst that could happen? Take this not as a rhetorical question but as a challenge requiring a detailed, documented response. Put contingent action plans into place for what staff should do if something goes wrong, says David Gammel, principal at High Context Consulting. Meetings in brief. While Im away I dont do all the Monday meetings, but I do have the COO brief me on them, says Tracey Frost, owner of Citibabes, which operates membership centers that combine child care with adult fitness and related facilities. Your admin keeps the trains running. Behind every great entrepreneur is an amazing assistant who solves problems and handles things, says Yao-Hui Huang, CEO of Gigapixel Creative. Your assistant can take messages, call you in a block of time, get the answers and get back to people. Access when youre remote. If you cant entirely avoid doing business while on holiday, consider making advance arrangements for virtual meetings and remote access to documents via secure download. Smartphone as security blanket. If no news is bad news to you, do bring your smartphone but set limits on its use. In some ways the BlackBerry gives you more freedom when you go away; Id be nervous if I were out of contact, says Frost. Do a post-mortem. Debrief your team and critique yourself so that your next vacation is even more successful. Miller says if his preparations for vacation fell short in one area, it was business development. When I returned, the sales pipeline wasnt as full as usual. I could have done a better job by loading the pipeline with more pre-sales activities. Your small business vacation away from your business gives you the chance to learn some big lessons. Heres Gammels teaching for entrepreneurs who are beyond the earliest stages of operation: Owners should be working primarily on their business rather than in it. Of course, its difficult to imagine your bootstrapped enterprise carrying on while the owner is (you) is taking a vacation. Says Powers: When you have your own business, its hard to let go. But it becomes more comfortable over time. Miller also urges fellow entrepreneurs to get over it. I thought it was going to be a huge deal, but it turned out not to be.

The employees you should worry about losing The average ones

The employees you should worry about losing The average ones The employees you should worry about losing The average ones Disturbing research  was released recently by The Gallup Group, indicating that 87% of the workforce is either not engaged (read: they are there physically but not mentally or emotionally), or totally disengaged (they actually undermine the success of an organization.) This is the highest rate of disengagement ever measured, and is in spite of the fact that over 85% of organizations have an employee recognition program (which obviously aren’t working).Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Forget the Top Bottom PerformersA basic challenge in working together with others is that not everyone performs at the same level with regard to the quality and amount of work done. Within a team, you will probably have at least one high achiever, a few above average employees, a group of solid team members in the middle, and then some who are not performing up to the level expected. Most su pervisors and leaders spend too much time and energy focusing on their top performers and/ or their low performers. But the group they should really be concerned about is the solid middle group â€" Joe Jane Average. Why?Because your top performers are self-motivated and are the ones who receive recognition and rewards through the company’s performance-based recognition program. The problem? This only reaches the top 10-15% of your team members, and the same ones year after year. And your lowest performers may or may not improve with lots of time, attention, and training. They are important as individuals (we all are) but they are a black hole for investing organizational resources, and (unless they are government employees and protected from firing) they will probably not be around long. The Key to Success: Your Average PerformersWhile many leaders focus on high achievers or worry about low performers, I would suggest that even more important are another group of employees: those w ho are critical to a successful organization but often get overlooked. They are the . . .  Average Achievers  â€" the group of employees that supervisors should be concerned about is the larger group of “middle” employees. The middle employees are those 50â€"60 percent who generally do their work but aren’t going to be recognized as top performers. Since they rarely reach the level of being recognized as a top performer, unfortunately, they can be overlooked and go for years (even decades) without hearing  any  words of encouragement or praise. An analogy would be that the middle group of employees is like the flour and eggs in a baking recipe. If all you have are spices and icing, you don’t have much of a cake! But these are the employees who  need  appreciation for their “day-in, day-out” work on mundane, not-flashy tasks. If you lose your middle employees, you will struggle to perform well as a team. I liken them to the linemen and linebackers on a football team. They a ren’t the star quarterbacks and running backs that score most of the points, but they are critical to having a solid team. Often, when encouraged and treated with respect, a number of the middle workers move up and become key team players important to the success of the organization.Conversely, if neglected and ignored they will either sink into the lower ranks of performance as a result of discouragement and not feeling valued, or they will quit and move on to another place where they hope to be appreciated for their contributions. (Remember: 79% of employees who leave voluntarily cite a lack of appreciation as one of the key reasons they leave.)You don’t want this to happen. So I suggest the following:Support and encourage those reliable employees who are doing a decent job.  Everyone needs encouragement. And often these individuals are doing the best they can with the skills and education they have. Showing a little appreciation can go a  long way  to keep them encouraged and part of the team.Celebrate team accomplishments as well as individual achievements.  Remember, it takes a team working together to achieve significant goals. And your solid middle group of team members enjoy celebrating the “wins” you experience together â€" and deserve to celebrate with the higher level leaders and “stars”   because without their support, the goal wouldn’t have been reached.Communicating appreciation to your solid middle group of employees will pay huge dividends in the success and stability of your team.  Don’t neglect them  or you’ll have a revolving door of team members (and you’ll be spending a lot more time hiring and training than you want to!)This article originally appeared on Appreciation at Work. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
